New seafood sensation
Akoya is taking the food world by storm
Adelaide’s Finest is excited to be stocking Leeuwin Coast Akoya, a delicious and highly-sustainable shellfish which is taking the food world by storm.
Akoya is an oyster and it has a distinctive flavour which is reminiscent of abalone, or mussels with the sweetness of a scallop.
The versatile and affordable shellfish (available at Frewville and Pasadena) can be enjoyed raw, poached, steamed, grilled, smoked or tempura fried.
Leeuwin Coast Akoya oysters are a sustainable choice for both chefs and home cooks. The shellfish is cultivated and harvested in Albany, WA, and it’s the first commercial production of the species.
The oysters are farmed on a longline system that is similar to conventional mussel farming techniques and this has a very low impact on our oceans. Akoya filters food from the water and does not require additional feed.
Gus from Pasadena’s seafood department says there has been strong interest in Akoya which have a unique taste which is difficult to describe – it really has to be experienced.
