Flower Power

Adelaide’s Finest has beautiful blooms for Mother’s Day from local flower growers including SA Carnations

When you pick up a bunch of blooms from Flowerbar this Mother’s Day, there’s a good chance they’re from our long-term supplier SA Carnations at MacDonald Park, just north of the city.

SA Carnations is a flower farm run by brothers Mark and Neil Green who supply Flowerbar at Frewville and Pasadena with locally-grown, seasonal sweet Williams, asters, stocks, carnations, dahlias, mini gerberas, delphiniums and the Mother’s Day favourite, chrysanthemums.

Mark started SA Carnations with his brother, Neil, in 1986.  The brothers started the business with one hectare for carnations and now have 3.5ha of land for growing an array of flowers  – with most  varieties available at Flowerbar.

“We started supplying Adelaide’s Finest in 2016 and it’s the best supermarket to work with, we don’t want to supply the major supermarkets.  My brother and I really enjoy our working relationship with Janene, Deb and Amy (Flowerbar florists),” Mark says.

Tips: Why is the chrysanthemum always associated with Mother’s Day?

Chrysanthemums are in season during autumn and the month of May which may have helped cement its place as the Mother’s Day flower of choice in Australia.   The fact that is has “mum” in its name also earned the flower its distinction!  The affordability of ‘chrissies’ also makes them a handy floral tribute for mums.
