National Recycling Week

It’s Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (running from Nov 10-16)♻️! This year’s theme, “Join the Cycle”, is all about ways to keep reducing, reusing, repurposing and recycling.

With our friends at KESAB, we’re sharing some sustainable shopping tips and options we offer at Adelaide’s Finest.

Earlier this year, we reintroduced the option for customers to have their groceries packed in produce boxes and made this service permanent after an overwhelmingly positive response.

If you’d like your shopping in a reusable cardboard box, just ask at the checkout and we’ll be happy to pack one for you. You’re also welcome to bring your box back next time you shop with us and use it again and again!

SUSTAINABLE SHOPPING

Battery recycling
Batteries can cause fires and should not be placed into household bins. Tape the ends to safely seal them and drop them at participating stores for recycling, saving rare earth materials and avoiding fires.

Cardboard packaging
Every tonne of paper/cardboard recycled saves 5,600kg of greenhouse gases = 17 large trees! Look for packaging with sustainability certifications and recycled content to keep our trees producing oxygen.

Steel packaging
Steel tins (i.e., beans/tomatoes tins) are highly recyclable, with each can recycled saving enough energy to power the average SA home for nearly 20 minutes! Each tonne of recycled cans saves 1.5T of greenhouse gases and 1.4T iron ore.

10c container recycling
Recycling aluminium cans (i.e., soft drink cans) saves ~95% of production energy. Each can recycled saves enough energy to power an SA home for over 1 hour!

Organics recycling
SA has some of the best commercial composters! They create nutrient-rich compost to grow our food. 1 tonne of food in landfill could produce 60kg of dangerous methane/1.6T CO₂ but in the compost, it improves our soil so our food grows.
Make sure that packaging is certified compostable (see bottom left logo) and put it into the green-lidded organics bin.

AFS OPTIONS

Battery recycling
At Adelaide’s /finet, we are pleased to offer convenient battery recycling collection points in-store. These batteries can then be recycled into new batteries.

Cardboard packaging
Paper and cardboard is a renewable resource so choose these options where possible to avoid single-use plastics. If cardboard/paper gets wet or dirty, it won’t recycle into quality new products but is great in the organics bin as a carbon input for soil.

Steel packaging
Choose steel tins for pantry staples. They’re ready to use so can save you time and energy, as well as being valuable recyclables. Make sure tins are clean and dry when you place them loosely into your recycling bin so they can make quality new products you can buy back.

10c container recycling
Cans are light-weight, handy at events, for water stations or simply your stubby holder. AFS offers many beverages to choose from that can return 10c to your pocket if you take them to a recycling depot.

Organics recycling
Adelaide’s Finest has multiple compostable packaging options in the produce and bakery aisles (as well as BYO options for bulk food). We compost any food waste via Jeffries Soils and sell their beautiful products for your gardens.
