SA Seafood Update

This week as we support local producers, farmers, and fishers, many customers have been asking about South Australian seafood and the algal bloom.

At all times, seafood sold in South Australia is the subject of rigorous testing and quality control protocols. The message from the government and agencies responsible for this testing is clear: “Seafood sold in South Australian stores is safe to eat, so keep supporting our local seafood industry.”

Premier Peter Malinauskas recently reassured the public about seafood safety saying all of the South Australian seafood that we put on the market is not just safe to eat, it’s of the highest quality of anywhere in the world.”

This includes oysters from unaffected farms, with the South Australian Oyster Growers Association (SAOGA) chairperson Peter Treloar saying that oysters harvested from areas across the state are safe to eat, with only a handful of oyster farms temporarily closed.

Our Seafood Manager Gus (pictured here) talks daily with our seafood suppliers and explains that much of the algal bloom is currently in the Spencer Gulf, with fishers instead heading to unaffected waters.

More information on the bloom and the testing protocols can be found on official government sites here and here  .

In addition, every day we source seafood from around the country including areas completely unaffected by the bloom. Please talk with our expert fishmongers who can help you make the best choices from our superb range. Stay tuned to ours socials, email and website for updates as the situation evolves.
